A Concrete House With A Rooftop Pool In Portugal

Scroll

Architecture practice Carvalho Araújo designed a concrete home inspired by the design of a shelter, overlooking the Serra d’Arga mountains in the north of Portugal.

“Above all the water tanks were an important meeting point, a workplace and a symbol of community life.” The sleek structure, built from a combination of concrete and glass, is integrated into the sloping terrain of a former ruin. Reminiscent of the idea of a shelter with water tanks – a design typical for this area – the house’s main section consists of a rooftop pool, offering stunning views of the valley.

In a statement about the project, Araújo says: “There are images of villages and farms we have retain forever. The first image that we associate with the terrain and the place is the water tank: public or private, they served to wash and to supply water. […] Above all they were an important meeting point, a workplace and a symbol of community life.”
