Hidden Public Spaces Captured By Gisela Erlacher

Scroll

For her series ‘Skies of Concrete’, Austrian photographer Gisela Erlacher captures so-called ‘non-spaces’ in countries like China, the Netherlands and her home country.

“With public space being under increasing pressure in today’s world of global acceleration and urbanization, spaces we are unconscious of edge ever more into focus.” Erlacher focuses on the sometimes overlooked public spaces in the urban environment, such as hidden lots under bridges. The images show different angles and perspectives influenced by the structure of concrete buildings. In her work, Erlacher specializes in architecture photography. The series has culminated in a book, which was released alongside essays by Lilli Lička and Peter Lodermeyer in 2015.

In a description about the project, it says: “With public space being under increasing pressure in today’s world of global acceleration and urbanization, spaces we are unconscious of edge ever more into focus.”
