A Border Billboard Framing The Sky

Scroll

Seattle-based atelier Lead Pencil Studio installed a billboard on the US-Canada border “signifying no advertisement, no traditional information and no navigational direction”.

“The work is intentionally non-declarative and open in all respects.”Entitled ‘Non-Sign II’, the art piece – constructed from welded stainless steel rod – invites contemplation on navigational direction and the prevalence of advertising while on the road. Rather than displaying information, the sign draws attention to the surrounding landscape and sky. Speaking of the intention behind their work, Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio state, “In the effort to downplay the significance of crossing a border, the work is intentionally non-declarative and open in all respects – materially, perceptually, and thematically.”
