A Semi-Subterranean Family Home In Belgium

Ghent-based architects OYO were given a carte blanche to create an environmentally-friendly family home in Belgium.
The result takes the form of a semi-subterranean split-level house, in which the living area tops the bedrooms. The home was designed as a continuation of the soil, interrupted by two volumes emerging from ground level: one serving as an entrance, the other allowing light into the top-level living area. TheĀ green roof enhances the thermal capacity of the home, enhancing its sustainability. Inside, warm materials were paired with wood to create a warm, Scandinavian-inspired feel. “The balance of light and material-use like stone, wood and white surfaces are the defining elements that bring everything together” state the architects.
