The Playful Design Of KONTAKI

Spiros Kontakis used to be a successful musician working between London and Athens. However, feeling that the financial independence required artistic compromises, he started to draw the images of objects and pieces of furniture, re-designing his life and soon establishing his own eponymous boutique.

“It feels like the old traditional, all-time classic, ball shaped design, wants to give birth to something new and fresh.”Kontakis’ main intention as a designer is to bring the magical childhood memories back with his pieces, and designing itself allows him to reveal his ‘childish’ self. Speaking about his ‘Popeye’ lamps, the designer says: “The name was inspired by the famous comic hero of my childhood, as well as the pop art character of the lighting it self. The eye is popping out and exploring the world with curiosity and last for knowledge. It feels like the old traditional, all time classic, ball shaped design, wants to give birth to something new and fresh, by setting the new ‘eye’ through which we observe the world around us.”
