Catching The Right Light With Alice Schillaci

In the age of growing sentiment for analogue photography, Alice Schillaci creates delightfully digital imagery, showing the magnificence of light and catching the mood of our modern time.

“I first thought of photography as a frame with lots of limits.”“I first thought of photography as a frame with lots of limits,” describes Milan-born photographer Alice Schillaci. By saying that, she means the limitation of showing the world with all its complexity – sounds, movement, time dimension – in a single frame. To Schillaci, these limits only provide a chance to find new possibilities. Working mainly in editorial and fashion, she treats the studio set as a field for experiments with different concepts and compositions, chasing the perfect combination of light and color.

“I studied photography in an art school in Milano, but I honestly never thought about fashion before. It happened just naturally,” says the photographer. An artistic background is visible in Schillaci’s sensible eye for light and its possibilities in the photographic image. “I love to play with lights and colors, this is really something that has belonged to me since a very long time, even before I realized it could be a job. That’s why my biggest inspiration is catching the light, day by day,” she adds.
