Japanese architect and artist Fumihiko Sano of studio PHENOMENON designed a home near Tokyo fronted by a double-layer stainless steel fence, which creates a striking moiré effect.
Centering the home’s layout around an expansive open-ceiling studio for the client to make kimonos in, the architect placed a bedroom, study and other spaces on the ground floor. Upstairs, a traditional Japanese-style room offers sweeping views onto Mount Fuji. Speaking of the stainless steel fence wrapping around the house, Sano says, “Being swayed by the wind, the stainless steel fence shines and causes a great variety of the moire patterns […] This is the place where people can closely enjoy the transitions of time, seasons, and climates through the house.”
