A Surreal Walled Football Field

By creating comic, poetic installations and placing them in public spaces, artist Benedetto Bufalino invites the visitors to look at reality from a different angle.

This time, as part of the Biennale Internationale D’art Contemporain curated by Paul Ardenne, the French artist has installed a 20×30 meters sports field in Anglet, France. As usual as it may sound, the work turns something familiar upside down again. Instead of using the white paint, Bufalino walled the field on a beach, plating with our perception of the well-known objects. Seen from afar, the concrete walls conjure the image of a life-size Lego construction. But to actually play on the field, one needs to climb the walls. “This difficult access alludes to the effort required to play in the field,” says the artist. This artistic manifesto, a meditation on the functionality of our living environment, hints at the rules, order and discipline required to take part in the game.
