Capetown-based photographer Christopher Shaw captures stimulating structural compositions while experimenting with light, shadows and color.

The young photographer agreed to take us on a day trip to Kalk Bay which is within the greater Cape Town area – it is on the False Bay side, which is often over looked by tourists for the more glamorous Atlantic coast line side…

“My Saturday started a few hours later than planned; nonetheless I headed down to the transport interchange to catch a train to Kalk Bay, a small ‘fishing village’ in False Bay.”

“I decided to go and watch the waves crashing into the harbour wall and the moored boats fight with the wild waters before meeting with my friend, Jason.”

“From the harbour we made our way up the Muizenberg mountains along Echo Valley to go and explore one of the 102 cave systems that can be found in the mountain. With all the other Mountains and natural wonders Cape Town has to offer, this side of the Cape is often overlooked by those visiting, as well as residents of Cape Town.”

“After hiking through the recovering terrain, which was destroyed by wildfires, we reached the Boomslang Cave system. Crawling, low down on all fours, we descended into the darkness of the cave until we reached the point at which you could stand up tall. Together we sat in the darkness of the main hall of the cave with only the sounds of bats swooping overhead, whirling winds from the entrance.”

“We continued deeper into the cave system until we could see the light from the cave exit illuminating the surrounding moss covered rocks. Once out of the cave we sat up on the mountain looking out over the ocean.”

“After making our way down and grabbing some fresh fish and chips and a beer at the harbour, I made my way to the train station to get back to the city.”
