An Introduction To Josef Adamu’s Sunday School

Words

Inspired by previous creative opportunities made possible through collaboration, Toronto-based Josef Adamu founded Sunday School. The collective brings together young, like-minded creatives to produce original stories through visual campaigns.

Adamu and Sunday School embrace the current digital environment, where developing and sharing creative projects is made more practicable than ever. Conducting all projects on a Sunday, the collective assembles the talents of photographers, creative directors, stylists and models. At the foreground of their values is the shared production of conceptually driven visual studies, often focusing on expressive representations of teamwork, motivation and their day-to-day inspirations. These themes can be acutely perceived in the editorial series ‘Practice’ and ‘Kinship’, shot by Benedict Adu and featuring Adamu with Ronny Ackah, which stylise quiet moments of unity in sportsmanship. In ‘Close Ties’, photographer Ararsa Kitaba explores compositional possibilities between the figures of Darnell Nicholson and Giovanni Ellis and a block-colour suburban environment.
