The Beauty Of Darkness

Leonard Cohen famously sang “There’s a crack in everything / that’s how the light gets in”; a contemplation on how breaking the darkness allows for light in both a physical and metaphorical sense. While there is an undeniable beauty in light, there is beauty in darkness too — we asked US-photographer Nirav Patel to explore both states of illumination with the new Huawei P10 Plus. He captured those places where the light gets in; cast through windows, lampshades and the sun as it rose over an ocean horizon. “I often use light as a way to isolate a moment or a person in a more chaotic scene,” he explains. “I feel that by using light you can emphasize emotional expression, another way of telling a story, or relaying a mood or feeling.” Nirav’s work captures quiet moments, seeking to find what he describes as, the “Joy in simplicity, peace in turbulence, power in stillness, and beauty in darkness” — and perhaps, as well, the allure of low-light.
