In the famed wine region of Southern Styria is Steinbach Keller, a minimalist winery loved by design-aficionados and viticulture-buffs alike.
Situated in Gamlitz, Austria, the winery dates back to the 1800s — and its buildings are from a variety of eras. Graz-based designer Ulrike Tinnacher has translated the ethos of the vineyard and its produce — clear, elegant and timeless — into an aesthetic language that unites the space, and all of its functions. “We consider winemaking to be an annual metamorphosis,” the winemakers from Steinbach Keller explain.“The grapevines grow up from earth, stones, minerals. Vines and grapes flourish under the sun, wind, and rain. From these, our wines are finally crafted by hand.” This craftsmanship is now expressed in the interior design of the spaces that they sell and create the wine in. Ulrike Tinnacher’s reimagined interior features navy, white and sage-green walls; metal trimmings; light wood paneling; intelligent plays of light and terrazzo flooring.
