Rotterdam and Shanghai-based architecture firm Monoarchi has designed ‘Treewow Villa O’: a wooden villa that functions as a one-room retreat, featuring an undulating roof with a curving eave in China.

The villa was designed for a holiday brand called Xband Club, in the mountainous rural village of Zhongcun in China’s Zhejiang Province. The tree house is surrounded by ancient bamboo forest, which includes a small river that runs through the area. The 80 square meter tree house is situated on the west bank of the stream that runs through the village. The circular floor plan consists of a bedroom, bathroom with an open bathtub, a living room and terrace. Part of the terrace is designed to extend out over the stream, which according to the architects, creates a sensation of floating above water when standing on that part of the terrace. The remote nature of the location helped determine its key feature—the roof, which is supported by a circle of 57 wooden trusses of varying lengths. The variation in length results in an eave that shifts in shape and form, providing different views from inside looking out.
