In ‘Through The Walls’, Belgian photographer Matthieu Litt explores the complexities of place by focusing his lens on unspectacular scenes of daily life in Iran.
‘Through The Walls’ exists as a homage to a nameless place, and the lyrical moments that occur there amongst the ordinary hours of the day. Though documentary in style, the series serves no grand narrative purpose—Litt does not attempt to unpack Iranian culture or to deep-dive into its history. Rather, he accepts his detachment from Iran, conscious of his role as an outsider. His artist statement notes that his interest lies mainly in this “notion of distance”, and for this reason, much of his work documents places far from his home in Liège.
