Kenta Eto Architects has designed ‘Usuki House’, a unique triangular home backdropped by the hills of Usuki City in the Ōita Prefecture of Japan.
Designed to merge with the landscape, the home mimics the surrounding topography of the site: its distinctive shape is intended as an architectural rendering of a hill. The roof of the building sits at a 24 degree angle, and its walls continue beyond the house to create a
semi-enclosed garden area. “The building appears as a slope that is neither a roof nor a wall”, the architects explain. The “roof” can be accessed from ground level, its slow gradient allows it to be used as a viewing platform with ease. As a “wall” it also gently shelters the garden, and offers some privacy to the double storey family home. The inside of the home is open plan and features light wood and grey detailing. The ground floor houses the kitchen and living area, along with the master bedroom, and upstairs is a playroom and a second bedroom. All images © Toshiyuki Yano
