Inside the brick walls of a Victorian warehouse in South London, local firm Carmody Groarke has created a concrete home and studio that embraces both the architectural past and present of the site.

House and Studio Lambeth’ is situated on a unique plot—landlocked on all sides by Victorian housing with only two existing entrances as access points. Carmody Groarke have inventively reimagined the site, creating an entirely new ground floor office and first floor “pavilion” without demolishing the existing building. Instead, the new studio and residence have been constructed within the shell of the crumbling brick warehouse. “The project retains the vestiges of the Victorian warehouse walls” explain the architects, “this gives character to the new ground floor offices.” Upstairs, the residence has been divided into a cluster of smaller spaces that the architects refer to as “buildings”. These small pavilions are edged in brick from the existing site, but have contemporary polished concrete interiors in keeping with the clean aesthetic Carmody Groarke have become known for.
