By elegantly applying his minimalist aesthetic to industrial materials, Japanese designer Shinya Oguchi creates sculptural objects with practical functions.
The dual nature of his practice is exemplified in ‘Arch’; a piece that is both a work of art and a place to sit. Designed to consider the “uniqueness of a bench”, Oguchi has endeavored to create a seat that can be used by three people comfortably for an extended period of time. The arch shape, which repeats throughout the bench, was chosen for both structural purposes and aesthetic appeal.
