A Four Storey Apartment In Lisbon Pays Homage To Early Modern Architecture

Gill’s revered 1916 Californian ‘Walter L Dodge House’ is recorded as one of the first ever examples of the Early Modern style in architecture. What the contemporary ‘Dodged House’ has in common with its inspiration, is its stylistic characteristics: asymmetrical forms, white reinforced concrete facades, flat roofline, and arched windows. Inside the narrow property, four storeys with three bedrooms and comfortable, light-filled living spaces are cleverly stacked into a 40 square meter plot. The house was built around themes of “space, void, and interior volume that [is] efficient in land use”, explained Zamarbide. Glass partitions separating each floor create transparent living spaces, allowing natural light to flow throughout the home.
