Sitting at the intersection between art and design, ‘Moon Rock’ by London-based practice Studio Furthermore is a collection of interior objects made from aluminum, that aim to look like they are formed from a rare material found in outer space.

For the collection, the designers created a speculative story whereby the pieces, which include tables and stools of varying shapes and sizes, are derived from lunar material found on the Moon. The narrative goes as follows: “Studio Furthermore project themselves forward a few years into the not so distant future. The designers consider mineral-rich moon rock to be their material of choice. [It is the] rarest of rocks here on Earth, and has a countable total of only 382 kilograms brought back by few successful space missions, some fifty years ago”. Although tongue-in-cheek, Studio Furthermore’s ‘discovery’ of an imagined space-travel service sourcing materials from the moon, does raise realistic questions about the scale and impact of industrial materials in design.
