The Pavilion House In Portugal Maximizes Space Through Clever Concealment

Constructed on top of a granite wine cellar, the ‘Pavilion House’ was designed to take advantage of its position set amongst the vines on a mountainside. Both the interior and exterior have been clad in vertical wooden slats; outside they offer a unique contrast to the grey stone of the original cellar, while inside, they serve to disguise private areas by rendering them as part of the walls. Essentially a single wooden room, the ‘Pavilion House’ has been made habitable through the inclusion of such cleverly concealed areas. Whilst the living space is open plan with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, the private areas—sleeping, eating, and bathing—are hidden from view. The kitchen is tucked away behind bi-fold doors, and the living room becomes a sleeping space when the double bed is folded down. Both the bathroom and storage area have been neatly stowed within the wooden-clad walls too. The ‘Pavilion House’ has been completed with a green roof, planted by the homeowners with local Portuguese vegetation.
