Acclaimed Chinese sculptors and partners Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci set up their eponymous studio in 2007; housed in a maze-like red brick studio in Beijing, designed by firm Atelier 100s+1.
The complexity of this project is revealed by its division of space: utilizing multiple courtyards and empty spaces in its multifarious design. The exterior of the building is characterized by a series of interlocking stairs, platforms, walkways, and open spaces, built across multiple storeys from many thousands of red bricks. Inside the 1250-square-meter labyrinth, sculpture workspaces and exhibition halls are interspersed amongst internal courtyards, spaces for moulding and polishing works, and a yoga room. The pioneering works of Xiang Jing, who is also an academic, explore the imperfection and realness of the female form and the psychological tension of human existence. Her husband, Qu Guangci, is known internationally for his post-political expression techniques, creating colorful and cherubic sculptures.
