For ten years, Austrian born photographer Josef Hoflehner documented the roadsides of America; outskirts populated by windswept grass fields, abandoned cars, snow-logged pathways, and faded signs leading to nowhere.

In the series ‘Roadside America’ (2007-2017), human presence is backdropped by a landscape that is both vast and magnificently barren. Amongst his photographs it seems that mankind’s existence is temporary; the buildings captured appear changed by the elements, and as they disintegrate under the pressure of snow and sun, the majesty of nature stands. Hoflehner’s ability to capture human impact upon the environment without ever picturing a person is a testament to his masterful approach to photographing both the natural and built world.
