Just outside of Lisbon is Comporta, a sleepy seaside province set on a seemingly endless stretch of white sand beach. Here, Studio 3a was enlisted to create a holiday escape amongst the pines, with the simple brief: “give me a bed and a bathtub and I’m happy”.

The Lisbon-based studio’s response to the client’s request was far more elaborate than a simple bed and bath set up. “As local connoisseurs, we sought inspiration from the construction of the traditional fisherman huts which are very functional and quick to build”, the architects explain. To this regional vernacular, they added a sustainable spin; focusing on both the build and the later use of the property. The four cabanas were finished using a chemical-free process that requires little-to-no maintenance, and inside, the architects opted for dark cement floors in order to utilize the materials thermal mass. The temperature and airflow have been regulated cleverly like this across the board. The position of the cabanas positions on the property has been chosen to maximize both solar orientation and wind flow, whilst indoors, photovoltaic panels and heat pumps are used for heating and cooling the buildings.
