Red Deserts And Rocks, Alex Rothmeier’s Road Trip Takes Us Through Some Of America’s Most Spectacular Landscapes

Flying into Las Vegas, Rothmeier first visited the majestic manmade Hoover Dam, before traveling to monuments created by nature; the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Lake Powell, and Glen Canyon. From there, he continued his journey to the famed Arizona-Utah border and Monument Valley: a desert of red sand bordered by the gargantuan sandstone buttes of the Navajo Tribal Park. His journey continued, and he traveled on to Factory Butte and Capitol Reef National Park, finishing his travels overlooking the spire-shaped rock formations at Bryce Canyon National Park. His photographs of these places are arresting: “The desert may seem like a simple empty place, but it is full of endless combinations of compositions, colors, and textures,” he explained in an interview with Pellicola Magazine. “You know a place is special when inanimate objects can feel so intense.”
