Edgar Berg Photographs The “Invisible, Intimate Bond” Between People

German visual artist Edgar Berg came to photography in a roundabout fashion; his motion design work landed him a job in Paris at a media agency, and it was on the streets of the great romantic city that he first thought to pick up a camera.

“Walking through Paris day by day really inspired me to grab a camera and start shooting”, Berg explains. “I quit my job and went back to Germany with a new seed planted that soon was a new direction for me.” This new direction saw an evolution of his creative practice as a whole; rather than forgo his training in visual design, Berg has allowed it to inform his photographic style. “It often doesn’t seem like it, but I always spend time thinking about the composition, or an idea, a story”, Berg explains. This aesthetic attention is evident in his considered framing and his use of light and form as graphic elements.

“When it comes to lighting a scene I am looking for something that makes it feel like a warm hug when you look at it”, Berg tells IGNANT. “I love to play with fashion but would never give it the main act. I rather use it as a tool to add a splash of color or to accentuate movement”. Like many creative multi-hyphenates, Berg’s work is constantly evolving and, as such, is difficult to define. “I really find it hard to describe my style of work, as it always depends on the project and the story”, Berg admits. “What I can say for sure is that when I work with groups there will always be an invisible, intimate bond between the subjects that you can feel.”
