London-based firm Proctor & Shaw has completed a pared-back yet stylish renovation of a 75-square-meter central London flat. The defining feature of ‘Marylebone Apartment’ is its Douglas fir wood partition wall, that elegantly separates the living and sleeping zones.

The apartment is situated, as its name suggests, in the area of Marylebone in London’s West End; a fashionable, up-market neighborhood filled with old and beautiful buildings. Located on the top floor of a period building that dates back up to a century, the brief was to give the apartment a full refurbishment: transforming it from a closed off, one-bedroom space into a generous living area with two double ensuite bedrooms. The design makes “the most of every square inch of the property’s modest footprint”, explain the architects. “The chosen solution reconfigured the bedrooms behind a beautifully detailed timber screen wall, to allow a consolidated street-facing living space”. The walls, floors, ceilings, and cabinetry in both ensuites are finished with a smooth, dark grey microcement, “to create a sensuous cocoon-like atmosphere”.
