For his surreal, colorful photographic series and print publication ‘Birds’, German photographer Thomas Lohr captured 80 different species of birds on camera.

What is unique about Lohr’s series is that the animals are not captured in their entirety: rather, abstract close-up portrait images depict the vibrant colors and textures of the plumage of various birds. The camera’s proximity to each of the portrait subjects means the viewer cannot always discern which part of the bird is being photographed. “In most cases, the pictures only give an idea of whether the strong, dark feathers belong to the tail or wings of a bird, or whether the pinkish fluff is found on the chest or neck of the animal”, explains Lohr’s artist statement. The animals Lohr captured were located in bird enclosures and aviaries across Europe; photographed without any editing or retouching. The images were collated into a limited edition book of the same name, printed on Japanese paper and bound in a minimal white hard cover. The book was published by Studio Baer; for more information click here.
