A sustainable, moveable, open-air bath for swimming that floats in Copenhagen’s crystal clear harbor—this was the goal for Maritime Architecture Studio’s ‘Dyppezone’, a clever concept for year-round bathing in the Danish capital’s waterfront.

Comprising eight floating modules assembled around a pool in the middle, the structure is equipped with an adjustable bottom which can be lifted up and down according to season and needs. “In this way, Dyppezone can be used both as a children’s pool in the summer and as a cold water basin in the winter,” explains Marshall Blecher, architect and co-owner of Maritime Architecture Studio along with Magnus Maarbjerg. As opposed to the permanent bathing zones in the Port of Copenhagen, Dyppezone is a small mobile unit that can easily move around the harbor, either in the existing bathing zones or in connection with events and saunas set up on the quayside. The project follows the success of a prototype artificial island called CPH-Ø1, which will soon be joined by three more constructions for a playful project titled Copenhagen Islands, and nicknamed ‘Parkipelago’. Dyppezone is clad in sustainable Forest Stewardship Council-approved timber, and is “free for use to all bathing Copenhageners, who want a comfortable and safe way to swim in the harbor.”
