A Steel-Clad Home In A Grove Of Ancient Oaks

Scroll

A rusted steel building juts from the San Franciscan earth; an ecological structure shaded by a collection of ancient oaks. This home was designed for a family of four by Californian studio, Faulkner Architects.

In designing the three-bedroom home, the architects looked at the landscape, climate and prior uses of the site. Built on an eight-acre slope, the orientation of the new residence was determined by the position of mature oak trees and the hearth of the house that originally occupied the site. In its new iteration, the large fireplace of the previous dwelling has been wrapped in concrete — becoming a structural load bearer, and an aesthetic testimony to what came before. The property is clad in a steel designed to weather softly with the rain. Windows break up this powerful exterior, walls of glass opening onto fairytale-esque woodland.
