In ‘Passages’, Japanese photographer Naohiro Maeda explores the process of mourning—his photographs documenting not only the depths of melancholia but his quest for lightness and calm too.

“Two years ago my close friend passed away and I moved to the United States”, explains Maeda. “These two strong experiences happened sequentially and created a disconnection I have never felt before. The weather and time of day in my work reflect my transition from sadness to calmness to lightness.” Each photograph in the series shares the same proportions; the horizon, an endless line that extends through each image. Though the places captured by Maeda are real, he reads them as imagined places of solace and comfort—fantastical locations carved from reality to ease sadness and find peace.
