Manhattan-based studio Thomas Phifer and Partners has designed the ‘Hudson Valley House II’; a collection of distinctive black shingle cabins that form a residential enclave in Upstate New York.
The collection of small buildings sit amongst native grasses, conifers, and honey locust trees in the verdant Hudson Valley. Each of the dwellings serves a different purpose, housing different elements of a traditional home. Whilst there is a main cabin with utility rooms on the ground floor, and living and sleeping areas above; there are also three buildings that separately house a chapel, two more bedrooms (with ensuites), and a study respectively. Inside, the buildings have been finished in Austrian spruce, whose pale coloring is dramatically different to the external aesthetic of the deconstructed home. The shingle-clad cabins have each been finished with a coating of Swedish black tar, their dark angular forms a striking contrast to the softness of Hudson Valley’s landscape.
