In ‘Slow Motion’, Dutch artist Aldo Bakker presents a collection of idiosyncratic designs with forms derived from traditional furniture archetypes.
On show at the Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery in New York until the 23rd of August this year, the exhibition ‘Slow Motion’ featured a selection of pieces crafted from a variety of materials—urushi and stone, amongst others. The works are each visually distinct; while some appear malleable – with forms folded as if cake batter or putty, others look as if they have been deftly carved from a single block of stone. The atypical design of the collection has not altered the function of its pieces; tables still behave as tables, and stools as stools. Rather, it offers the potential for people to integrate conceptual design into their domestic space in a way that is both practical and beautiful.
