Sitting on a hill in the rugged Mediterranean landscape, ‘Guest RA’ by Rome and Perth based architecture firm MORQ is a residential property in Calabria, Italy, characterized by robust, natural materials and stunning sea views.

From its elevated position on a hilly slope, ‘Guest RA’ offers astonishing views of rolling hills, blue waters, and rugged countryside. Fringed by the local vegetation—mostly cacti, palms, and fig trees—the residential building is in constant dialogue with its rural surroundings. Its fascinating design is the result of the sloped topography of the Mediterranean landscape: the house is superbly adjusted to the terrain, cascading down towards the Gulf of Squillace through an ingenious structure of parallel solid stone levels. The compact stone structure is punctuated by multiple openings, each instilling a feeling of uncluttered space and connection to the outdoors.

MORQ wanted the residence to be unobtrusive and perfectly integrated with nature. Constructed from robust, natural, and locally sourced materials in the tones of the land, the refined spaces have a rich material texture and dimension. The stone flooring and walls, and stonework details across the entire property, reflect the region’s characteristics while blurring the boundaries between the architecture and the land. Alongside the sensorial qualities of its materials, ‘Guest RA’’s spacious layout makes for a peaceful living environment. The lower level is wide open towards the sea, bathed in sunlight throughout the day. The living space flows naturally outward onto the ample sized terrace, which features an infinity pool overlooking the stunning bay below. Here, outdoors and indoors conjoin seamlessly and the ambience feels timeless, as if created by the landscape.
