With a background as a pattern designer and artisan in textiles, Finnish artist Ida Vikfors has used this experience to influence her new series of artworks, which focus on creating subtly different dimensions of minimalism.

“Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated by different materials, surfaces, and textures, and most often I have looked more with my hands than with my eyes,” she explains. Her work appears tactile and delicate, though it is a rough and long-lasting surface. “The pieces are modest, and they need a bit of attention to reveal their personality,” she says. “Depending on how the light reflects, you experience different shades and shadows, where sculptural lines and textures create a surface that the eye wants to rest on.” Her monochrome pieces allow the viewer to explore a change in perception as the natural light moves across them. “The meeting between what the material is and how it is being perceived, is the thing I love and want the viewer to experience,” she says.
